Agricultural Development Fund (ADF)

SML contributes a percentage of its turnover to the ADF. This money is allocated  to worthwhile agricultural projects in the mining area.

Sierra Rutile/Sierra Minerals Foundation
SML contributes a percentage of its turnover to a Foundation. This money is allocated to community development projects in the mining area. The most recent donation, in October 2008, was made to the Jenega Village Clinic and the Walihun Town Clinic and School, amongst others.

Road Works
SML/PW have renovated and maintained a number of roads in the area. This includes the main haul roads from Gbonge to Gondama Plant site and from Gondama to Nitti. The roads to Gbonge Village, Gbangatoke Town, Serabu Town, Mokelle Village and many more have also been improved. The Company also maintains the road from the mining area out to the main Freetown - Bo highway.

Construction Materials
SML/PW have, and continue to, supply materials to community construction projects such as schools, churches and mosques. They mainly supply building sand, but have also supplied roofing sheets, cement etc in the past. A good example is Panguma Village - most of the houses had their roofs burnt off in a fire and SML/PW supplied roofing sheets and nails to repair the houses.

Water Wells
SML and PW have renovated and constructed water wells in a number of local villages such asNgolala Beah, Gbonge and Ngolala Bongeh.

Children of the Nations
This charity, based close to the mine site, provides accommodation for orphaned children and also provides the main high school in the area. SML/PW cleared the site and dug the foundations for the school and accommodation. We also constructed access roads and the main playground yard as well as clearing the football field.

Other Clearing Grading Works
Examples include Matagelema Market and Gondama Market.

Rehabilitation of Mined Areas.
As part of the contract, SML/PW restores the pits that have been mined out. This involves reinstating the previously reserved topsoil. The old pits are then planted with ground cover shrubs and also cash crops such as cashews and oil palm. Pits restored so far include Jenega 2, Jenega 1A and Senehun 3. Note that many of the pits have not been restored as they are still active and continue to be mined.
